Voltage spikes, or surges, can come from lightning activity near power lines, network switching or large motors starting up. A short, high-energy transient can damage inverters, battery systems, appliances and electronics, or shorten their life. A surge protective device (SPD) installed in your switchboard diverts much of that excess energy to earth before it travels through your circuits.
Our licensed electricians fit a switchboard-mounted SPD matched to your supply and, where your solar system would benefit, add protection on the AC and DC sides of the inverter. Surge protection reduces risk; it cannot stop everything. No device protects against a direct lightning strike to a building. SPDs are also sacrificial: after a large event, or over many years, they can reach the end of their life, which the status indicator shows.
Many modern inverters include some internal surge protection, so we only recommend extra DC-side devices where the cable runs, location and equipment justify it. The price depends on single-phase or three-phase supply, space in the switchboard, whether solar or battery protection is added and whether the board needs other upgrades first. Protection works best alongside good earthing and safety switches, which we check at the same time.

Switchboards without enough space, or with old fuses or unsafe wiring, may need an upgrade first, quoted separately.
DC-side and battery protection are only added where suitable for the equipment and are quoted as separate items.
