Plug-in smart switches cannot safely handle large hard-wired loads such as electric storage hot water. A contactor is a heavy-duty switch mounted in your switchboard and rated for those loads. Connected to a compatible inverter or home energy management system (HEMS), it turns the load on when surplus solar is available, or at the times you set, and off again when it is not needed.
The Smart Switch & Contactor is from $390 supplied and installed. This is an indicative starting price; the final price depends on the load being controlled, switchboard space, the control signal your inverter or HEMS provides, cabling distances and whether a manual override switch is added.
