Many farms export solar during the day for a low feed-in tariff, then buy power at night for cool rooms, pumps, lighting and the house. A battery stores that daytime surplus for later. It can also keep selected loads running when the grid goes down, which matters on rural lines where outages from storms, bushfires and faults can last hours or days.

Backup on a farm is only useful if it covers the loads that matter. We work through which circuits must stay on, for how long, and what the battery can realistically support, including the start-up currents of pumps and compressors. You get a clear, honest picture of what the battery will and will not do before you commit.

Batteries shift energy and provide backup; they do not make a small solar system bigger. Farms that export little solar may benefit more from extra panels first.

From 1 September 2026, NSW business battery incentives apply to eligible business batteries from 20 kWh, with NSW indicating around 30-40% of installation cost for eligible combined solar-and-battery installations.

Frequently Asked Questions
Often yes, if the cool room is on a backup circuit and the battery and inverter are sized for its running and start-up power. Compressors draw a surge when they start, so we check that against the inverter rating. We also estimate how many hours of backup you can expect, which depends on the cool room load, the battery's charge and whether the sun is out.
It depends on how much solar you export during the day, how much you use after sunset and how long you want backup to last. We use your bills or interval data to size the battery so it fills on most days rather than sitting partly empty. For farms that need longer backup, we discuss larger capacity or generator integration.
A battery can soften some effects of a weak supply by covering loads during short dips and outages and reducing how much power you draw from the line at busy times. It cannot fix a network fault or a supply that is undersized for your property. Where voltage problems are serious, we recommend raising them with your network as well.
Usually yes. If your existing inverter is compatible, a battery may connect to it; otherwise a hybrid inverter or AC-coupled battery can be added. We check the age, compatibility and condition of your current system on site, and tell you if replacing an old inverter makes more sense than working around it.
