A smart diverter that sends surplus solar into your electric hot-water tank instead of exporting it for a low feed-in tariff, installed by our licensed electricians.
From $890 (Supplied and installed), including GST. Indicative starting price: the final fixed price is confirmed in writing after a site assessment.
If your solar system exports much of its output in the middle of the day, you are usually selling that energy for a few cents per kWh and buying power back later at a much higher retail price. An electric hot-water tank is one of the simplest places to store surplus solar, as heat. A smart solar diverter measures what you are exporting and sends just that surplus into the tank's heating element, adjusting continuously as clouds pass and appliances switch on.
Our licensed electricians install the diverter, its export sensor and any wiring changes needed at the switchboard, then set a backup boost so you still have hot water on cloudy days. Pricing starts from $890 for a diverter supplied and installed. This is an indicative starting price; the final fixed price is confirmed in writing after we check your tank, element and switchboard.
We look at your whole system before recommending a diverter. If a battery, an EV charger or a heat pump would make better use of your surplus, we say so. Where you already have a battery, we set priorities so the diverter and battery work together rather than competing for the same solar. We are a New Energy Tech Approved Seller with $20 million public liability cover, and all work is carried out by our licensed electricians.
Solar homes with an electric storage hot-water tank that export a lot of power during the day and want to use more of it themselves.
Tank type matters. Diverters suit electric storage tanks with a resistive element. They are not suitable for gas or instantaneous systems, and most heat pump water heaters need a different control approach.
Many tanks are wired to an off-peak controlled load tariff. Moving the tank to a solar-diverted circuit can change how that energy is billed, so check your plan before switching; we explain the options. Stored hot water must still be heated to at least 60 degrees Celsius regularly to control bacteria, so the boost settings are important. The price depends on switchboard space, cable distance to the tank and whether circuit changes are required.
1. Request a quote and send a photo of your hot-water tank label and switchboard.
2. We confirm the tank is suitable and visit to check the wiring and sensor location.
3. You receive a fixed written quote, including any circuit changes.
4. Our licensed electricians install the diverter and sensor and set the boost.
5. We test the system on the day and show you how to read the display or app.
The listed price is an indicative starting price; the final fixed price is confirmed in writing after we check your tank and switchboard.
Suitable only for electric storage tanks with a compatible resistive element.
Changing a controlled load circuit may affect your tariff; please confirm with your electricity retailer.
Faulty elements, thermostats or tanks are not included and are quoted separately.
Savings depend on your solar surplus, hot-water use and tariff and are not assured.
