A current transformer, commonly called a CT clamp, measures the current flowing through a cable without cutting into it. Monitoring systems, batteries and smart EV chargers rely on CTs to know how much power your home is importing or exporting. A solar-matching EV charger, for example, uses that reading to charge the car from surplus solar instead of grid power.

The CT Clamp Kit is from $190 supplied and installed. This is an indicative starting price; the final price depends on how many CTs are needed, single or three-phase supply, the distance from the switchboard to the device and whether wireless or wired communication is used.

What's included

  • Confirmation of the CT type and rating your monitor, battery or EV charger requires
  • Supply of compatible CT clamps and any extension or communication cabling
  • Installation on the correct conductors, in the correct orientation, by our licensed electricians
  • Configuration of the connected device to read the CTs
  • Testing against real loads and solar export to confirm accurate readings
  • An explanation of what the readings show in your app or charger

Why Blue Energy Solar

CT problems are usually simple: a clamp on the wrong cable, facing the wrong direction or on the wrong phase. The result can be a battery that charges from the grid or an EV charger that never sees surplus solar. We place, test and verify every clamp against real loads before leaving, and our licensed electricians do the work safely inside the switchboard. If existing CTs are the cause of odd readings, we correct them rather than selling you equipment you do not need.

Recommended for

Owners of monitoring systems, batteries or smart EV chargers that need accurate CT readings to track usage or charge the car from surplus solar.

CT clamps must match the device they report to. A clamp from one monitoring system will not necessarily work with another, even if it looks the same, because ratings and outputs differ.

  • Solar-matching EV charging needs a CT or meter at the grid connection point so the charger can see export.
  • Three-phase homes usually need a CT on each phase for accurate readings.
  • Installing CTs involves opening the switchboard or meter panel, so it must be done by a licensed electrician.

If you already have CTs and the readings look wrong, the fix may be repositioning rather than new parts.

Directions

1. Request a quote and tell us which monitor, battery or EV charger the CTs are for.
2. We confirm the correct CT type and number for your supply.
3. Our licensed electricians install the CTs and cabling in your switchboard.
4. We configure the device and test readings against real loads and solar export.
5. We show you how to check the readings in your app or charger.

Warnings

The price shown is an indicative starting price; the final fixed price is confirmed in writing after checking your equipment and supply.
CT clamps are installed only by our licensed electricians and are not supplied for self-installation.
CTs must be compatible with the connected device; unsupported equipment may need a different solution.
Wireless CT links need a signal check, and long distances or thick walls may require wired communication.
Switchboard defects found during installation are reported and quoted separately.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common signs include your app showing export at night, consumption lower than solar production while appliances are running, a battery charging from the grid when it should not, or an EV charger ignoring surplus solar. These usually point to a clamp on the wrong cable, reversed or on the wrong phase. Our licensed electricians can check and correct the installation.

Usually not. Each device typically needs its own CT or meter, because devices use different ratings and communication methods. Some systems can share data, for example an EV charger reading grid flow from the inverter's meter. We check what your equipment supports and design the simplest arrangement that gives each device accurate readings.

Generally, yes, or it needs a connection to a meter or inverter that already measures grid flow. Without that reading, the charger cannot tell when surplus solar is available. We confirm how your charger gets its data, then install and test the CT so charging follows your solar output as intended.

Often, yes. Some monitoring systems and EV chargers support wireless CT transmitters, which avoid running communication cable from the switchboard to a garage or carport. Range depends on walls, distance and interference, so we test the signal before relying on it. Where wireless is unreliable, a wired connection is usually the better long-term choice.
